WHAT IS MSSG?
The Medical Scientists Society of Ghana (MSSG) is a scientific professional body representing Biochemists and Biological Scientists in health, bio-medical science, and industry in Ghana. Our areas of practice include, inter alia, clinical and bio-medical laboratories, Hospitals, clinics, health centres, forensic and toxicology laboratories, pharmaceutical and In vitro Diagnostic Device Industries, molecular genomics and genetics laboratories, food and nutritional genomic and biochemistry, pharmacogenomics, food and drugs authorities, academic institutions and medical research institutions.
VISION
To be the genuine professional body promoting the development, profession, practice and application of biochemistry and biology to the advancement of health and well-being of the people of Ghana.
MISSION
To provide the necessary framework to promote the development, practice and application of biochemical and biological science, concepts, techniques and research to the advancement of health and well-being of the public, to the benefit of our country, its people, our profession, and as a legacy for generations to come.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Society are: (1) to promote the profession, practice and application of biochemistry and biology to the advancement of health and public well-being, (2) to improve the development, accuracy, interpretation and utilisation of biochemical and biological concepts, techniques, examinations and research employed in: (a) assessment of health and disease, (b) prevention, diagnosis and control of illness, disease and disability, (c) forensics and toxicology, (d) pharmaceutical studies,(e)food and nutritional assessments, (f)research, development and other bio-medical applications, and (3) to concern ourselves with matters affecting the development and professional activities of Biochemists and Biologists in Ghana.
OUR ACTIVITIES AND FUNCTIONS
Biochemists and Biologists perform analytical, advisory, research and development activities and functions: Perform, direct and supervise chemical, biochemical, biological, molecular genomics and genetics laboratory examinations and services; Provide scientific education and clinical advice on selection, interpretation and utilisation of laboratory examinations; Conduct and drive medical research and development; Design, develop, and characterize the analytical and clinical performance of new assays and tests or biomarkers; Develop, evaluate and provide new service; Review and appraise existing protocols and techniques to meet clinical needs; Manage/audit scientific techniques; Develop and maintain quality standards; Maintain scientific basis of the service and participate in clinical audit; amongst others.
WHO QUALIFIES TO BE A MEMBER OF MSSG?
Persons who hold at least a bachelor's degree or are pursuing a degree in Biochemistry and Biological Science, who are in any way interested in or concerned with the practice, development and application of chemical, biochemical and biological science, concepts, techniques and research to the advancement of health, public well-being, health research, innovation and development, whether in a professional, academic or student capacity, are eligible for registration and admission to membership.
